Liege Waffles with Pearl Sugar

The sweet, caramelized pearl sugar crust on these Liege waffles makes them a Belgian treat. You can eat them for breakfast or as a sweet snack.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1/2 cup whole milk, lukewarm
  • 2 tablespoons active dry yeast
  • 1/3 cup warm water
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups pearl sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions:

Warm the water and active dry yeast in a small bowl

Leave it alone for five minutes or so until it foams up

Mix the room-temperature butter and granulated sugar together in a large bowl until they are well blended

Mix the yeast with the eggs and add it to the bowl with the butter and sugar

Mix until it's smooth

Add the salt and all-purpose flour and mix them together until a dough forms

For about 5 minutes, knead the dough until it gets smooth and springy

The pearl sugar and vanilla extract should be mixed into the dough until they are spread out evenly

The dough should rest for about an hour, or until it has doubled in size

Cover the bowl with plastic wrap

Follow the directions on the package to heat up your waffle iron and lightly grease it

Cut the dough into little pieces and roll each one into a ball

Put a dough ball on each waffle iron that has been heated up and cook them until they are golden brown and crispy

Take the Liege waffles out of the waffle iron and give them a minute or two to cool down before you serve them

As a treat, enjoy your homemade Liege waffles with pearl sugar
